The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Monday it will hire for “mission-critical field positions” amid expert warnings that the National Weather Service has been cut too sharply just as hurricane season arrives.

The National Weather Service says it plans to hire more than 100 additional staff members. The move follows complaints and concerns after the Trump administration eliminated more than 500 positions.

The new hires would not make up for all the personnel lost in the Trump administration’s cutbacks, but could reduce the number of offices that need to cut back on 24/7 operations.
