The San Jose City Council has approved Costco’s much-debated plans to build a new warehouse store at the Westgate West shopping center with dozens of new conditions to address traffic and safety concerns voiced by thousands of residents.

Concluding a three-year application process, San Jose City Council approved the development of a Costco at Westgate West Shopping Center, during a meeting Tuesday.

San Jose officials have greenlit the long-planned Westgate West Costco warehouse in what some residents describe as a once-thriving shopping center.

The San Jose City Council voted 8 to 0 to approve a conditional use permit for the warehouse store in the Westgate West Shopping Center, located on Prospect Road and Lawrence Expressway. Two councilmembers recused themselves. The vote came after dozens people spoke out on the project.

Plans for a controversial San Jose Costco, opposed by some neighbors, were unanimously approved by the San Jose City Council on Tuesday, according to the San Jose Spotlight.
