Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker says the state has done nothing but follow the law, but the Department of Justice says the opposite — arguing that both Illinois and Chicago passed legislation that inhibited immigration enforcement in the state.

Federal officials are asking a judge to bar the Illinois, Chicago, Cook County and the Cook County Sheriff from using local laws that protect migrants to hamper law enforcement.

The Justice Department sued the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago on Thursday, seeking to block state and local protections for undocumented immigrants that the Trump administration says are impeding federal immigration enforcement efforts.
