Florida officials aren't wasting time implementing their new legislation, which increases penalties for crimes committed by immigrants in the country without legal authorization and allocates nearly $300 million toward beefing up state and local participation in federal immigration enforcement.

Governor Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday that Florida law enforcement agencies will enter into additional Memoranda of Agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to enhance the state’s ability to enforce federal immigration laws.

The Trump administration is expected to issue a public health order as soon as this week labeling migrants at the US southern border as risks for spreading diseases, marking an escalation in the president’s effort to severely restrict immigration, according to three sources familiar with the discussions.

The new agreements involve the Florida State Guard, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the FDLE.

The Donald Trump administration recently fired more than a dozen immigration judges, actions that contradict a need for more judges given the millions of cases pending in immigration courts across the country.
