Rays make interesting addition in acquiring reliever Forrest Whitley
NEW YORK — The Rays made an interesting addition to their relief corps on Friday, acquiring former first-round pick Forrest Whitley from Houston for cash. Whitley, 27, was designated for assignment earlier this week by the Astros, having made five appearances, allowing 10 runs (nine hits, six walks) over 7 1/3 innings.

Friday’s deal ends the Astros’ nine-year relationship with Whitley, whom they selected at pick No. 17 in the 2016 draft and gave a $3.148 million signing bonus. Whitley threw just 10 2/3 major-league innings with an 8.44 ERA in an Astros uniform.
