Derringer first rose to fame as the lead singer of The McCoys, who reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the 1965 song “Hang On Sloopy.” A teenager at the time, Derringer was still going by his birth name, Richard Dean Zehringer, and performing with his brother Randy.

Rick Derringer, a former teen star who went on to have a six-decade rock and roll career, has died. He was 77. Variety reported that his caretaker, Tony Wilson, announced the news. Derringer died Monday in Ormond Beach, Florida. No cause of death was provided, but Variety reported that he had been in “ill health” for several months.
According to futurerocklegends.com, Cheech and Chong have been eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1997. They have never been nominated. To be eligible for induction, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before they’re eligible.
