Americans are viewing Tesla in an increasingly negative light, according to an annual survey. Even scandal-hit UnitedHealth Group and the U.K. oil company behind the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe are viewed in a better light.

Chinese EV giant BYD sold more electric models than Tesla in Europe for the first time in April, as consumer interest in Elon Musk's automaker collapsed.

Despite steep tariffs, the Chinese carmaker leapfrogged Tesla in April, in what an analyst called a “watershed moment” for the continent’s auto market.

Tesla cars were outsold by a rival electric-vehicle manufacturer in Europe for the first time. The Chinese company BYD sold 7,231 fully electric cars in April compared to Tesla’s 7,165, according to the automotive data firm Jato Dynamics.

Cadillac said the percentage of its electric car buyers coming over from Tesla has reached 10% as the automaker expands its lineup.

When you look at sales at the brand level, things get a little worse for the American automaker. Volkswagen sold more EVs than anyone else in Europe last month, increasing by 61 percent to 23,514 units. As for Tesla? It fell to 11th place, with just 7,165 sales in total, a 49 percent decrease year on year.

BYD Co. sold more electric vehicles in Europe than Tesla Inc. for the first time, overtaking the American brand that long led the continent’s EV segment.

The EV maker will roll out about 10 self-driving cars next month and scale up to about a thousand, Musk told CNBC in an interview.
