The US Department of Transportation has fined American Airlines $50 million for violating the rights of people with disabilities, including unsafe physical assistance resulting in injuries and undignified treatment of wheelchair users.

The Transportation Department on Wednesday slapped American Airlines with a $50 million penalty over breaking federal laws protecting the disabled, particularly those using wheelchairs.

The U.S. Department of Transportation penalty against American Airlines comes after "numerous serious violations of the laws protecting airline passengers with disabilities" over a four-year period.

The Transportation Department issued the fine after an investigation revealed “cases of unsafe physical assistance that at times resulted in injuries and undignified treatment of wheelchair users.”
