Republican lawmakers introduced a bill two weeks ago that would eliminate the District of Columbia's local government, including the elected mayor and city council.

Citing crime and homelessness in the national capital, President Trump said he wants the federal government to "take over" and govern Washington D.C.

While federal workers are concentrated around Washington, D.C., there are thousands more in cities throughout the country. Laying them off will impact those local economies.
