Holly died in a plane crash—along with Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper—on Feb. 3, 1959. But his musical legacy continues to challenge expectations of what rock and roll can be.

Buddy Holly was born into a musical family in Texas on this day in history, Sept. 7, 1936, and went on to become a major star in the 1950s, inspired by Elvis, among others.

Playing at the Pickard Theatre in Brunswick through July 15, the interactive 1950s musical tells the story of rock 'n' roll icon Buddy Holly and his rapid, brief rise to fame.
