He was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Knoxville by Pope Benedict XVI on Jan. 12, 2009, and was officially installed as the diocese’s third bishop on March 19, 2009.

Earlier this week, the diocese of Tyler, Texas, confirmed that the Vatican had also opened an investigation there. Catholic officials did not offer an explanation of what prompted the investigation.
