The Humane Society of the United States rescued more than 250 animals from a fur and urine farm in Ashtabula County.

The Humane Society says there are no federal regulations in regard to the care of animals slaughtered and farmed for fur. The Grand River Fur Exchange was licensed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Humane Society says, but the state also does not have laws or standards for fur farms.

Humane society officials say foxes, raccoons, wolf-dog hybrids, skunks, opossums and coyotes were living in filthy cages with no protection from the bitter cold.
