Before passing almost directly over the Houston region on July 8, when it caused widespread power outages and contributed to dozens of deaths, Hurricane Beryl devastated multiple Caribbean islands and was the earliest Category 5 storm on record in the Atlantic basin.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has officially retired four hurricane names — Beryl, Helene, Milton and John — following a deadly and destructive 2024 season that caused widespread devastation across the Caribbean, United States, and Mexico.

The World Meteorological Organization has added four names to the list never to be used again to describe a tropical storm. Beryl, Helene, Milton and John did so much damage that they will be distinct forever.

The World Meteorological Organization has announced that they have retired three names from their hurricane names list.

Hurricanes Helene, Milton and Beryl were so nasty last year that their names are being retired. The World Meteorological Organization on Wednesday officially replaced the names of the trio of 2024 storms that killed more than 300 people and caused more than $119 billion in damage.

About 100 names of tropical storms and hurricanes have been retired from future use in the Atlantic Ocean, and now Beryl, Helene and Milton join them.
