In 2004, the Summit Middle School was named the Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School in 2004. It was the same year Johnson was diagnosed with the illness that would eventually take his life.

For a second consecutive year, Montclair State University has awarded the Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School Theater Arts Department with its Outstanding Play Production by a Middle School award.
