Mount Everest has many names ... In the 1850s, the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India—an effort by the British to map the subcontinent—identified the peak as the highest in the world.

Prior to that, George Everest had served as surveyor general of the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, which took place over several decades starting in 1802.
