(WKBN) — The current forecast is indicating mostly clear skies to view tonight’s full Strawberry Moon. According to NASA, the term “Full Strawberry Moon” originated from the Algonquin tribes in the northeastern United States. It’s a special name for the full moon in June, a time when strawberries ripen and are ready to harvest.
The full moon will be its lowest hanging since 2006, due to a phenomenon known as a "major lunar standstill" or "lunistice."
The final full moon before the start of astronomical summer is about to rise, and has a nickname that does back hundreds of years.
In the Northern Hemisphere, June 20 is the day on which the sun is highest in the sky, aka the summer solstice!
