Tennessee is the Volunteer State. Evidently plenty of people were happy to volunteer new and novel mascot ideas, but Tennessee is absolutely chock full of unique school spirit nicknames.

And then in 1973-74, The Webb Feet of Tennessee were born. The mascot isn't a shocking visual at all; it's just a rooster.
