A private lunar lander from Tokyo-based company ispace was aiming for a touchdown in the unexplored far north with a mini rover.

Tokyo-based ispace Inc. said it’s trying to make contact with its lunar lander after attempting to become the first non-US company to reach the moon’s surface intact. Ispace’s Resilience lander was expected to touch down on the moon after 4 a.

The Tokyo-based company ispace said its lander dropped out of lunar orbit as planned. But there was no immediate word on the outcome, following the hourlong descent.
