Louisiana death row inmate Jessie Hoffman is the state’s first person to be executed with nitrogen gas after he raped and murdered 28-year-old Mary “Molly" Elliott in 1996.

Hoffman declined a last meal and did not say any last words before the nitrogen gas began to flow at about 6:21 p.m., according to execution witnesses who spoke at a news conference.
