President Donald Trump said he wants to do away with FEMA at a visit in Asheville, North Carolina which was hit hard by Hurricane Helene.

Donald Trump, who has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration’s response to Hurricane Helene, which struck North Carolina in September 2024, said that he would like to see states assume more responsibility in the aftermath of natural disasters, rather than the federal government.

Trump departed Joint Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. around 9:30 a.m. and landed in Asheville, North Carolina Friday morning to tour damage from Hurricane Helene. Among those in North Carolina to greet Trump was Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee.

FEMA still has 11 Disaster Recovery Centers open in North Carolina, which have served 60,950 individuals so far.
