Gov. Ron DeSantis calling a special session to work on stopping illegal immigration isn't a surprise. Here's why.

Ron DeSantis doubled down on his push for the state to pass new laws to fight illegal immigration, even as Republican legislative leaders are reticent to do anything until the regular session that begins in March.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ border security plan is extensive, with some proposals that are similar to those of other states and others that appear to surpass them. DeSantis called a special legislative session to position Florida to quickly carry out President-Elect Donald Trump’s mass deportation efforts.

Trump, who endorsed the Governor’s call for a Special Session, told DeSantis he got elected to “solve” the “immigration issue,” and DeSantis said Florida is “ready, willing and able to assist” with his Special Session called for the last week of January offering a timely opportunity.

The Florida governor laid out several immigration reform proposals, including making illegal entry into the U.S. a state-level crime and appointing a "state immigration enforcement officer" to oversee state and federal coordination.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has called a Special Session starting Jan. 27 to take up legislation cracking down on illegal immigration.

Another topic in the upcoming session will be a proposal to repeal in-state college tuition for illegal immigrant students.
