How many inmates at Florida's Alligator Alcatraz? How many people in a cell? Where do they eat? Who works there? Is there air conditioning? Showers?
“In most respects, ICE facilities operate with less consistent oversight and legal accountability than state or federal prisons or local jails,” Brinkley-Rubinstein said. “ICE detention facilities and people that run them tend to be much less transparent about their operations.”
Several immigrant detainees described high tension and anxiety at the remote, hastily constructed facility over a lack of information, recreation and access to medication.
Gone are the days of scaling prison walls or digging holes out of Alcatraz. If a prisoner wants to escape their cell, the best method appears to be climbing into a plastic bag. At least that how one creative inmate found freedom in France last week – before he was quickly tracked down and locked up again.
