The director's commentary track for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King provided further insight into Arwen's choice to become mortal.

Arwen didn't need to fight, but the character would have benefited from more time with Aragorn. Her participation in the Battle of Helm's Deep would have been a nifty way to allow for that.
