A haunting 150-year-old photo found in a North Carolina attic shows a young black child named John, barefoot and wearing ragged clothes, perched on a barrel next to another unidentified young boy.

Riffing off 2019's "hot girl summer" and 2022's "Adam Sandler summer", online magazine The Cut has declared 2023 the year of the "barefoot-boy summer".

The photo of Omran has since gone viral, along with the video released by Aleppo Media Center, an anti-Syrian government activist group, that shows a rescue worker placing the boy in the ambulance.
