Black-necked swans have an estimated value of $3,500 to $4,000 each, according to Platt. The city was able to work out a trade with a Chicago-based breeder to obtain the species last time.

Willie, the city's remaining black-necked swan, was struck and killed near South Boulevard and Lake Morton Drive, the same area his prior mate was killed at four years ago.
