This year's West Indian Day Parade is expected to draw two million spectators to Brooklyn. The festivities kicked off around 6 a.m. with the annual J'Ouvert festival.

The city is taking extra steps to ensure that this year’s J’ouvert, the popular day-break festival that precedes Brooklyn’s West Indian American Day Carnival, is the safest one yet.

The West Indian American Day Carnival, which spans Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights kicked off at 11 a.m. and remained calm until around 4:20 p.m.
