Louis Marius Prevost, the father of Pope Leo XIV, served on a D-Day landing ship during World War II and later became a junior lieutenant for the U.S. Navy.

He had just finished training and was stationed on the south coast when he was told he would be leaving on an LST tank landing ship. Once the tanks rolled off, he helped collect the wounded.
