Antlion larvae live two to three years, depending on species and environment. Adults, which have four wings and wingspans of three to four inches, eat nectar and pollen and live just a few weeks.

Dobsonfly larvae live in the water but can breathe both in the water and on land. Most of their development happens during the larval stage, which in itself is made up of 10 to 12 stages.

For more than 180 years, scientists had pulled these "monster" larvae from the guts of fish, wondering they looked like as grown-ups. Turns out, they are the baby version of a deep-sea shrimp.

The larvae can survive being frozen at temperatures as low as -15 degrees Celsius; immersion in fresh or saltwater, ... where midge larvae live, is just a few degrees below zero.
