January’s full moon, the “Wolf Moon,” rose alongside Mars at its brightest, occulting it for a short period as seen from North America. Here are the best images.

Mars will seem to disappear behind the full wolf moon Monday for many sky-gazers. Throughout January, also look up to see Venus, Saturn and Jupiter in the night sky.

On Monday night you may have a chance to witness the moon obscuring the Red Planet at its brightest, as well as a comet’s closest approach to the sun.

Mars currently has two satellite moons – Phobos and Deimos – the twin sons of Ares, the god of war (Mars in Roman mythology) and Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty, and procreation, in Greek mythology.
