In December 1996, the patient had undergone a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication, with resolution of his reflux symptoms. The surgery was performed with a five-trocar technique.

Between 1976 and 1989, 33 patients were treated with Nissen fundoplication; in the 10 years from 1990, 51 patients were treated with the combined Collis–Nissen procedure.
