ALTON - Five students from Alton High School have confessed to defacing the famed Piasa Bird painted on the limestone bluffs in this Mississippi River city, authorities said.
A modern-day painting of the Piasa Bird welcomes people to Alton, Illinois at the edge of the Mississippi River. Some upgrades could soon move forward around it to improve the visitor experience.
The Piasa Park redevelopment along with a new Byway Discovery Center are part of a $10 million Illinois Capital Grant Development Project.
The monument describes the legend of the Piasa Bird mural on the bluffs along the Mississippi River. The object was placed there in 1984. It has been tipped over before, but never broken.
