Following a dedication ceremony, the St Cuthbert's banner has now been placed over the saint's tomb at Durham Cathedral.

This remained a mystery until 1827, when a hidden tomb was found in the cathedral containing bones thought to be those of St. Cuthbert. This theory is not without controversy.

The auctioneers said fragments of the coffin were removed when St Cuthbert's tomb was opened in the 1820s and then it was opened again in 1899 and the remaining pieces removed.

St Cuthbert’s tomb would not be reopened again until 1827, when the tomb revealed a series of coffins, of which the last contained a skeleton covered in silk.
