Whether you are working down toward your chin ... you taper the beard in a few steps. Measure from the top of your ear to the place you want the beard to be full length, or the end of the fade.

I also think it's good to fade beards ... a longer beard, which helps elongate the face and make it look less circular. For an extra touch, taper the beard to a point below the chin.
