The federal Office of Civil Rights on Monday said the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Principals Association, which regulates school sports, and Greely High School in Cumberland have 10 days to change their policies or the issue will be handed over to the Department of Justice.

Less than a month after launching an investigation, the federal government has determined for a second time that Maine is in violation of Title IX. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says it conducted a compliance review to see whether the state “engaged in discrimination by allowing males to compete in sports reserved for girls.

This follows a compliance review initiated last month following a brief confrontation between Gov. Janet Mills and President Donald Trump at the White House.
