The special effects are terrific. The climactic clock tower scene, which finds Doc harnessing lightning to power his DeLorean time machine, is cleverly designed by Lutkin, Vanstone and Ross.

The movie-to-musical transfer is so broadly staged, you wonder whether the it aims to be a self-aware joke for fans or a thrill ride with sincerity.
