“While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long this shortage will last,” Waffle House said in a statement. “We are continuously monitoring egg prices and will adjust or remove the surcharge as market conditions allow.”

Not even Waffle House can escape the rising cost of eggs, as the popular 24-hour breakfast chain is now placing a 50 cent surcharge on every egg sold.

Waffle House became one of the first big chains to join smaller restaurants with surcharges for egg dishes. Economists don’t see near-term relief on egg prices.

About $40,000 worth of eggs were taken from a trailer belonging to Pete and Gerry’s Organics, police said. U.S. wholesale egg prices are at a record high.

The theft was reported Saturday night of 100,000 organic eggs worth more than $40,000 from a distribution trailer in south-central Pennsylvania.
