The removal of 21 children from a Los Angeles-area couple has put a spotlight on the practice of using surrogates to build a family.

Video showed the baby’s nanny shook and hit the child on May 5. He wasn’t taken to a hospital until two days later.

Kayla Elliott said she was tricked into carrying a child for an Arcadia couple who had multiple women serving as surrogates for them. At least 21 children were seized from the couple's home.
