Snowplows with the West Virginia Division of Highways not only continue to clear highways after a winter storm swept through the state, but also prepare for expected additional winter weather. According to a press release,

The watch center at the West Virginia Emergency Management Division headquarters is staffed 24/7, monitoring everything from roads to emergency calls to environmental concerns. However, a state of emergency means more hands on deck as an "enhanced" status is activated.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, 5.5 inches of snow fell on Jan. 5, 2025, which was covered in a coating of about 1/4 inch of ice, thanks to a freezing rain late in the day. More snow and freezing rain is likely from Winter Storm Blair before 2 p.

Thousands were left without power after a winter storm hit West Virginia in January 2025, and there are some tips people can use to stay warm while waiting for their power to be restored. According to a press release,

All 55 West Virginia counties are under a state of emergency for the winter storm sweeping across the country.

West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory and Hazardous Weather Outlook. Eastern Panhandle counties could get 5-9 inches of snow with one-tenth of an inch of ice.

The Weather Channel started naming winter storms during the winter of 2012-2013. The National Weather Service does not name winter storms.

Storm Blair is bringing heavy snow to areas in the mid-Atlantic region that haven't seen such weather in a decade.
