Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, passed away on February 4 at the age of 88 in Lisbon, surrounded by his family.

The Aga Khan was a familiar and revered figure to members of the sect scattered in minority communities not only in the Indian subcontinent and Africa, but also in Europe and Canada.

The title of Aga Khan was first bestowed upon Hasan Ali Shah (1804-1881), the 46th Imam of the Nizari Ismailis, by the Iranian king Fath-Ali Shah Qajar in the 19th century.
