Before UConn, Auriemma was a JV coach at Bishop McDevitt High School, an assistant at St. Joseph's, an assistant at Bishop Kenrick High School and an assistant at the University of Virginia.
Seven years he spent coaching Bishop Kenrick High School, before joining St Joseph’s staff as as assistant in 1985. He got Hawks’ head gig in 1995, and kept that position until 2019.
While at Bishop Kenrick High School, Auriemma also played baseball. He is said to have "lived" for baseball's competition, camaraderie and team atmosphere.
Auriemma is the winningest coach in women’s basketball history, leading UConn to 11 national championships, and has won an NCAA record 1,239 games in his 40 years at the school.
The Hall of Fame coach has a long-standing bond with Martelli back to when Auriemma was an assistant coach for him at Bishop Kenrick High School.
Their connection dates back to the Philadelphia Catholic League, with Auriemma and Martelli’s father sharing a sideline at the former Bishop Kenrick High School.
