Loop the cord twice so that it looks like three parallel cables. The braids will start and end at each side that is looped. Cross over the end of the cable and begin the 3-string braiding process.

Once you're out of nuts, braid the cord 5 more times. Wind a strand around the base of the braid and double knot it tightly. Remove the braid from the clipboard and flip the other way around.
