German authorities say police and prosecutors have searching Catholic Church properties in connection with a probe of the archbishop of Cologne over perjury allegations.
Some 44,772 Catholics in the Cologne archdiocese left in 2021, up from 17,281 in 2020, according to church figures. Nationally, the number of Catholics leaving the church has also risen dramatically.
