The study’s authors said the noises were not specific to the Salicornia gracilaria species of algae that had been observed in the tank.

Under the project, two booklets, 'Processing of seaweed Gracilaria salicornia into jam and pickle' and 'Processing of seaweed Ulva lactuca into jam' were published.

To determine whether the algae themselves were responsible, the authors studied sound emissions from a tank of the Hawaiian invasive algae Salicornia gracilaria.

They have selected three types of species for culture and they are: kappaphycus, gracilaria salicornia and gracilaria edulis.

Seaweed cultivation has been promoted in Lakshadweep Islands in Agatti, Kavaratti, Kadmat, Chetlat and Kiltan islands, with Gracilaria edulis and Salicornia, added the minister.
