In a statement on Maya Angelou’s Facebook page, the esteemed scholar’s family said Johnson passed away peacefully at his home in Oakland, California. His cause of death was, however, not revealed.

The late Maya Angelou always hosted a Thanksgiving gathering at her home, and her son, Guy Johnson, continued the tradition with family and friends at his mother’s home in Winston-Salem in 2014.
