Kwanzaa is a seven-day holiday created in 1966 as an alternative to Christmas for African-Americans. It is modeled after several African festivals that celebrate the winter fruit harvest.

With the sounds from the sax and keyboard, community members kicked off the first day of Kwanzaa in Cincinnati with a bang. Kwanzaa is celebrated for seven days, from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.

Intown Atlanta Celebrate Kwanzaa Noon and 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28. $17.95 for adults and children (discounts for guests with vouchers and SNAP/EBT with documentation,) free for members.

Kwanzaa has grown in popularity in the decades since its founding and is celebrated by 3% of the country, according to a 2019 AP-NORC survey.

Westbury Arts presented a spectacular Kwanzaa Family Celebration on Dec. 15. The gallery was adorned with beautiful African-inspired decorations that set the tone for a festive occasion.

Kwanzaa, she said, is an occasion to show gratitude for the blessings they granted throughout the year. “We thank the ancestors because we wouldn’t be there without them,” she said.

On other Kwanzaa nights, Odle-McNair and her husband, Keith McNair, 68, celebrate the African American cultural holiday in a more lively way, with Afro-centric music and dancing, she says.
