Rich in honey-hued churches and elaborate baroque designs, the southern Italian city of Lecce is often regarded as the 'Florence of the South'.
In total, there are around 30 churches in Lecce’s old town between Porta Napoli and Porta Biagio, as well as several abbeys and aristocratic palaces, all of which were built in the Baroque period.
Our favorite Lecce church was San Matteo. Built in 1667, it is pure Leccese. It has two columns on the facade, one of which is decorated, though only partially.
