The purple peanut M&M is the first new character in 10 years, according to the brand. "Purple has been in the works for a very long time, for years," said Jane Hwang, global vice president of M&M'S.

Purple won 41 percent of the vote over aqua, which had 37 percent, and pink, which had 19 percent. Purple will join the existing mix of red, blue, brown, green, orange and yellow in August.
