This month, Saint Toribio Romo's relics will be displayed in churches around California. His spirit is said to guide, feed and shelter immigrants as they journey across the U.S.-Mexico border.

St. Toribio did not want to be a bishop, and he no doubt had reservations about leaving home to spend the rest of his life halfway across the world.

The first time I heard about the saint in our family was when my aunts and uncles from California called my father to share the news of Toribio’s canonization by Pope John Paul II, on May 21, 2000.
