PORT ARANSAS, Texas — From 1885 to 1950 the Port Aransas economy relied heavily on tarpon fishing. Fisherman would come from all over the country just to get a chance to catch a tarpon.

Port Aransas has been around since the late 1800s. Originally called Ropesville, then Tarpon for the large number of fish being caught nearby, finally being renamed to Port Aransas in 1910.
