The Chicago school board voted to keep open all of the seven schools slated for closure in the Acero Charter Network through the end of the 2025-26 school year.

A School Board vote in December had spared seven Acero schools from closure for a year and promised to absorb five of them in 2026. But after extensive debate, the board determined two campuses should close this spring.

The Chicago Teachers Union said a father was arrested by immigration agents Wednesday morning as he was dropping off his kids at a charter school in the Gage Park neighborhood. A community member sent a video showing the moments Acero Schools said an adult was detained by U.

The plan overrides the charter network's plan to shutter half of its schools. The change came after CPS officials warned that helping Acero keep all seven campuses could violate state law and be financially risky for CPS.

The 21-member board at its monthly meeting Thursday voted to amend language in a revised resolution that would now aim to save five Acero schools: Cisneros, Casas, Fuentes, Tamayo and Santiago.

Two students were with the adult outside the Southwest Side school Wednesday morning, officials said. "It is really terrifying for families and traumatizing for students," one observer said.

The Acero charter network announced last year plans to shutter Cruz K-12 as well as Casas, Cisneros, Fuentes, Paz, Santiago and Tamayo elementary schools due to declining enrollment, increasing personnel and facilities maintenance costs.
